We retired in Charleston in 2009.

Why did you decide to switch to solar energy?

We didn’t switch, but rather added solar panels to reduce power bills.

How much did you know about solar energy?

We have been looking into solar for several years. We’ve been interested in energy efficient homes since building a geodesic dome in 1983.

What kind of system did Southern Current install for your home?

We have 37 panels, LG 360w NEON, a 13.23 kW system, roof mounted with compatible inverter.

What made you choose Southern Current for your solar installation?

We looked up several companies and compared them against one another including getting cost estimates from different companies during the past year. We liked most what we saw about Southern Current.

What was the process of going solar like?

Do your research, compare different companies and systems, decide what you want, get a price, choose a company to install, pay the money, wait, get installation…begin saving money!

What was the most difficult part of the solar process?

Waiting for all the approvals, certificates, inspections and the actual installation process. Once we made up our minds to do it we were excited and ready to roll with it.

What benefits have you seen since the installation?

In August we saved $243.62 and it was a month with many stormy, overcast and cloudy days! We generated 1539 kwh for the month.

We have a computer program that shows us how much we are generating and using and it appears that we will reach or exceed our estimated production. We have a big house, over 4,100 square feet, we have a pool and lots of guests so our power bills have been big.

What would you say to someone who is interested in going solar?

Where else can you make an investment that you will recover 55% on your income taxes and have that investment begin to pay you back at a rate that far exceeds any interest you could earn on that money? Our projected savings is 63% of our power bills and if that turns out to be true we will in essence be earning better than 10% on the money we spent. That’s better than any bank!

Charleston, South Carolina Homeowner Discusses Going Solar With Southern Current

The following interview was conducted with Marv N., Southern Current residential solar customer who lives in Charleston, South Carolina. Find out how much money you could be saving on electricity costs by contacting Southern Current today!

Please tell us a little bit about yourself.

My wife and I retired to Charleston from Chicago 10 years ago. I am a retired science teacher and my wife is a retired labor and delivery nurse.

Why did you decide to switch to solar energy?

The cost of electricity from SCE&G is high and climbing, which made going solar an easy decision. In the long run, this solar power system will save me thousands of dollars. The environmental impact of burning fossil fuels was also part of our decision. A clean environment is important to us.

How much did you know about solar energy?

As a science teacher, I knew the basics of how solar energy and solar panels work. I did my research on costs and benefits, so I felt comfortable making the decision.

What kind of system did Southern Current install for your home?

I have a rooftop system consisting of 23 LG 285 watt panels along with 23 Enphase microinverters.

What made you choose Southern Current for your solar installation?

I chose Southern Current after speaking with two other companies. The Southern Current representative was an engineer who could best answer my questions and concerns. The installation was designed while we spoke and I was given a firm price for the system. I was able to make changes to the design to get the system I wanted. Plus Southern Current has an office near my home. They can control the quality of the installation because they use their own employees and not sub-contractors.

What was the process of going solar like?

The entire process was made simple by Southern Current. They applied for all the required permits and filed the necessary paper work with the HOA. The installation went on as planned. The city and electric company inspections were done quickly and the system was turned on about 2 weeks after installation.

What benefits have you seen since the installation?

Overall my power bill for the first year was $200. I expect it to be close to zero the second year as the system is building up credits leading into the hot summer months. My system was turned on at the end of April last year so it didn’t have time to build up enough credits to take it through the summer. This the second year, I should have enough credits to get through the summer with little or no cost.

What would you say to someone who is interested in going solar?

Definitely look into it while government rebates & incentives are available. Every situation is different, but one thing is for sure: Electric rates will go up. The payback period is about 7 years and will be less as electric rates rise. Solar panels are one investment that will pay back dividends for years to come. When you call solar companies for information, I would definitely include Southern Current in the comparisons.

Piedmont, South Carolina Homeowner Discusses Going Solar With Southern Current

The following interview was conducted with Laura S., recent Southern Current residential solar customer who lives in Piedmont, South Carolina. Find out how much money you could be saving on electricity costs by contacting Southern Current today!

Please tell us a little bit about yourself.

I have lived in South Carolina since 2003. I moved here from Delray Beach, Florida. I am originally from St. Louis, Missouri.

Why did you decide to switch to solar energy?

I have been interested in solar energy for a long time. I like the idea of cleaner energy. The sun isn’t going to go away any time soon. My husband says it is to make up for all of the dinosaurs that he burns in his cars. We were purchasing a new home so it seemed like the right time.

How much did you know about solar energy?

Not a whole lot, but I know that it is clean and that it works!

What kind of system did Southern Current install for your home?

We have a 15.60 kW roof array with 52 300-watt panels spread out over our main roof and on the attached garage/workshop roof.

Southern Current sales representative Paul Hayden gives thumbs up in front of solar install.

What made you choose Southern Current for your solar installation?

I chose Southern Current because our rep., Paul Hayden, was the only person willing to work with me and provide an estimate prior to my husband and I closing on our house.

What was the process of going solar like?

There was a process? LOL, It was very easy. Paul had worked up a preliminary estimate. After we closed on the house, he came out, took photos, looked around, and went over our options. We decided on the panels, and filled out paperwork. Once everything was in place, Eric came out to go over the installation. That was on a Friday. The installation crew showed up on Monday, and were finished by Wednesday. Everyone was extremely professional.

What was the most difficult part of the process for you?

Waiting for Duke Energy to come through with the rebate. Southern Current went the extra mile to ensure that we were guaranteed the rebate BEFORE the install. That way we had an out if we didn’t get the rebate. Duke was discontinuing the program. We got in at the very end.

What benefits have you seen since the installation?

Well, we just received our first bill since making the switch to solar. Know how much it was? $8.96! And that was the monthly meter fee, so we actually didn’t have any electricity costs!

What would you say to someone who is interested in going solar?

I would say do it, there’s really no reason not to!
