Jasper County Home To Biggest Solar Install In South Carolina
The 71.4 MW Solvay Solar Energy Facility is a solar project in Jasper County. It’s comprised of 270,599 solar panels and spans nearly 900-acres on a site south of Charleston, South Carolina.
It covers an area equivalent to 500 football (soccer) fields and will provide enough power for 15,000 households – or 164,000 MWh a year. The utility-scale solar install will offset approximately 80,000 tons of CO2 emissions.
Solvay is an international chemical company with five locations in South Carolina including Charleston, Greenville, Piedmont, Rock Hill and Spartanburg. They will buy the associated renewable energy credits (RECs) associated with the solar power plant for the next 15 years.
“South Carolina’s renewable energy sector continues to grow by leaps and bounds, providing energy to our citizens while protecting our beautiful natural resources. This new $100 million investment will make a big difference in the Lowcountry community, and we congratulate Jasper County on this great announcement.” –Secretary of Commerce Bobby Hitt
